a good book – my original poem for Poetry Friday

I’ve seen other kidlitbloggers blog about Poetry Friday for a long time. Today I’m finally joining in with a poem I wrote about the power of a good book. I hope you enjoy it.

A good book

When I open a good book
the words pull me in
and I get swept up in their magic
feeling along with the characters,
caring about them,
until,
blinking,
I am pulled out of the world
on paper
and back into my own life,
my soul a little more full.

Great little poem about a good book. It’s exactly what we all do when we are drawn into the other world that a book can take us.

  2. Cheryl Says:

Thanks, Jon. I’m glad you like it. :)

  3. Annie Says:

Hi, Cheryl–I love your poem. You totally nail the experience of a good book. Congrats on your first Poetry Friday entry.

It’s my first day as well, although mine is certainly not an original.

  4. Cheryl Says:

Thanks, Annie; it was lovely to read what you said. (grinning) I just went to your blog, but it seems to be down; I’ll try again later. Welcome to poetry friday :)

Lovely poem, Cheryl. Welcome to Poetry Friday :) !!

  6. Cheryl Says:

Thank you, Jama. And what a lovely essay you wrote about Paul and his music and lyrics/poetry. I really like that: ” there is poetry in the best lyrics, and music in the best poetry.”

  7. Cheryl Says:

Annie, I got there, finally, by searching in Google. Your method of memorizing prepositions, to a tune, sounds like a more fun way of memorizing them, if you have to, than just straight.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful poem. It really is amazing what a good book can do!

  10. Cheryl Says:

Thanks, Lori; I’m so glad you enjoyed it, and I really appreciate your taking the time to tell me. And yes, I love what a good book can do. :)

  11. Kakie Says:

I like your poem. It is enjoyable when a good book pulls me in, but I find it even more rewarding when I see it happen to a child. A while back I wrote about the experience I had doing story time at one of our local libraries on our blog:

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
    Warmest Regards,
    -Kakie Fitzsimmons

  12. Cheryl Says:

Kakie, I can see that reading books you’d written to children, and having them positively respond, would be very rewarding, even exhilarating. That’s part of why we write, right? To share something with others. I’m glad you had that experience.

  13. Zoe Says:

Thats exactly how i feel whenever I read a good book!! =)

  14. Cheryl Rainfield Says:

Thanks, Zoe, for telling me. I’m glad!
