I read to my son every night. I pick three books for him to choose from and he selects what he wants to hear. Generally, he likes to take the book to bed with him after and sleep with it beside him. This charms me no end. :-)

Of course, these are relaxing beddy-bye time books; we also read lots of energetic books during playtime that involve chanting, marching and exclamations of various sorts. All good stuff!

That is a great story, Cheryl! Thanks for sharing it.

Ms S, I’m so glad you read to your son every night! And in the day, too. :) What a great gift you give him.

Jen, thanks for thanking me. (grinning) I absolutely love the story! It made me feel so good to read it.

Who knows why anyone gets in anywhere, but you’d have to believe The
Streak would be a winner, and recently Kristen was accepted to the
master’s in liberal arts program at the University of Pennsylvania.
She doesn’t have the money to go. But certain as that jertain, the
young woman has a plan: She’s going to get a job when she graduates,
save and reapply in a year or two.

  6. Cheryl Rainfield Says:

Dan, oh my gosh! That would be such a generous, kind thing to do, to pay for Kirsten’s education! That makes all this even more heart warming and feel-good!

Please let us know how it goes.

Cheryl, good news…….after contacting the father and daughter in the story, the NYTimes graciously fwded my letter to their email account, I just heard back from Kristen, and she said “thanks for the gesture” , very sweet letter she wrote in response to my offer to help out…..but she told me she has found a way BY HERSELF to assemble the needed funds to attend grad school this fall after all via the GRACE OF GOD, and she’s all set to FLY…..good for her and great story..details to follow……it all worked out fine….and long live LIFE!

  8. Cheryl Rainfield Says:

Danny, that’s fantastic!! What a wonderful, happy outcome. Thanks for letting us know! And you were so thoughtful and generous in your offer. I’m so glad it all worked out.

UPATE: According to sources, Kristen has a chance now to write a book about her experiences reading reading reading (as detailed by the Times story) and if a book deal comes through — you can imagine that a few literary agents reading that great Michael Winerup story in the Times over their morning coffee that day immediately JUMPED at the IDEA to contact Dad and Daughter and ask them if they might be interested in a BOOK DEAL — …. I don’t know the details, but my guess is that a good book deal with enable Kristen to attend grad school this fall with the advance she will earn — hopefully enough to cover two years of master’s degree program — and the book might be co-written by Dad and Daughter, I don’t know details, just guessing — so all is well in New Jersey AND THE WORLD today …..and Kristen will go to grad school after all and she will pay for it by herself with advance and royalties from the book and whatever other spinoffs happen, like TV appearances etc. Go get em, Kristen, and God bless! What a nice happy ending to a nice happy story in the papers last week!

Yes! Every day since I read Jim Trelease THE READ ALOUD HANDBOOK, I read to my boys (3 yrs, <1 year). The older one can't nap without several stories (sometimes an hour), but I cherish our time reading together. Since we started doing it, he's learned so much new vocabulary and has even started recognizing sight words.

    We'll do it forever.

  14. Cheryl Rainfield Says:

Katrina, I’m so glad to hear it! That’s wonderful!
