I am SO excited about my novel SCARS coming out! It took me 10 years to get it published. I felt so alone and had so much shame for many years about using self-harm to cope with the abuse. I know it would have helped me to know I wasn’t alone. I hope, through SCARS, that more people will know they’re not alone, and that people who haven’t used self-harm to cope might gain a bit more compassion, as well as enjoy a good read.
I created this contest to celebrate SCARS’ release. I hope you’ll enjoy watching the book trailer, and that you’ll want to let others know about it. To entice you to do that, AND to help me spread the word about SCARS, I’ve created this contest. I hope you’ll join me, and have fun!

The scars that crisscross 15-year-old Kendra’s arms are not for public consumption. Her cutting is kept secret from her parents, her friends, and even her beloved therapist. But things change when she meets Meghan, a classmate whose promiscuity with boys belies her budding romantic interest in Kendra. Like other books and movies on this topic, Kendra’s story isn’t really about cutting—she was sexually abused between the ages of 2 and 12, and the resulting trauma has blocked out her rapist’s identity. What sets Rainfield’s story apart is the stalking element: her rapist is still hounding her, giving her frightening reminders that she will be killed if she tells anyone the truth. Sophisticated readers may very well roll their eyes at melodramatic clichés (“It’s only my utility knife that releases the screams inside me”) but that same sense of overwhelming emotion might appeal to teens wrestling with similar issues. The book becomes most enjoyable near the end, when it makes an implausible hairpin turn into the realm of psychothriller. Rainfield’s closing research guide is unusually extensive. 1) Share the SCARS book trailer with a friend or others online–through email, Twitter, linking to it or embedding it on your blog, etc. (The link to the video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lF5xEKY0LAU.)
2) Leave a comment on this post telling me where you linked it. Please include a link to each of your posts, and include your email address if it’s not linked to your comment.
3) If you email my video to a friend/friends, please send me a copy at contest@cherylrainfield.com–you can CC (carbon copy) or BCC (blind carbon copy) me, or just send it to me. You get one entry for every friend you send it to. Please make sure that if you send it to a friend you write a personal note, and that you’re not spamming your friend. I hope it’s something you’d send any way.
You get one entry for posting a link to the SCARS book trailer, and for each time you post a link to the trailer in a different place. That means that if you post a link to the trailer on your blog and on Twitter, you’ll have two entries. You’ll also get one entry for every friend you email the video to.
