Book Giveaway for Banned Books Week Hop! Win 1 of 3 signed copies of SCARS

I am happy to be part of the Banned Books Week Hop! My own book SCARS was challenged–so I’ll be giving away three copies of Scars this week. I will sign and personalize the book for you if you live in the US, Canada, or UK, and I’ll include some swag (bookmarks, etc.)

I also created a video on banned books–on not letting other people dictate what we read, and on some of my favorite banned books. I’ve always read banned books, and strongly believed it’s important for people to choose what they read, but now that Scars has been challenged, I care about that even more. I hope you’ll watch, and if you like it, maybe you’ll share it.

To enter the giveaway, leave a comment below. That will get you one entry, and you can also get added entries. Contest is open to US, Canada, UK, and anywhere that the Book Depository will ship.

You get:
one entry for leaving a comment on this post
one entry for tweeting or posting about this contest
one entry for watching my banned book video (please be honest; I want the video to reach people)
three entries for tweeting or posting about my banned book video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8HWyL5Y8L4

Good luck!

  13. Jess Says:

I would love an autographed copy of scars!

And I watched the video and totally agree with you — not reading those banned books not only gives power to strangers to decide what you should read, but that you miss out on different perspectives.

And yes, Speak and Crank are both incredible :) I didn’t realize And Tango Makes Three was banned D:

I posted your video on my FB too — http://www.facebook.com/jessrichardson :)

    Thanks for the giveaway!

Watched the video. I concur that sweeping things, that are too difficult or uncomfortable to talk about for some, under the carpet for the ‘benefit’ of everyone is robbing us of our freedom of choice.

  20. Donna/Happy Booker Says:

Wonderful video. I love what you said about how these books offer different perspectives on very important issues. I tried to explain something very similar in my own blog post about this but you said it much more clearly. The only positive thing about a book being banned or challenged is that it draws attention to some of the most important books that some people may otherwise have missed. Thanks for the video and for the giveaway!

  23. Zoey42 Says:

    Thanks for the giveaway!

I think that it’s parent’s choice whether the book is appropriate or not. I just check ALA’s website and was surprised by the list of banned books (new – Twilight, Hunger Games, and also classics – The Great Gatsby, The Catcher in the Rye, To Kill a Mockingbird, Animal Farm..) If the book is banned because it is unsuited to age group, in my opinion it would be better to mark this book with age limit and not to mark it as banned.
But the worst example of banning books – political reasons – it’s something that needs to be changed.
Drugs, sex and thing like that..well, I think most people, especially young, need to read about these topics – to help them make an opinion about it or to understand that they’re not alone with their problems.

  48. Dominique Says:

I agree with everything you had to say in your video. And I like that you said that books provide a safe way at looking at certain topics that are all around us. I really feel that in preventing their children from reading books with content they may see as uncomfortable, or even inappropriate to them, parents are doing more harm than good by “protecting” their children. And are not properly preparing them for life. These YA books, and even the classics that are often challenged give them something they can relate to, or to help them better understand what they and others around them are going through. And even the fantasy books can provide a much needed form of escape. And in general these books help inspire creativity, they educate, and they help people to see things in a different light. Anyways, thank you for this giveaway, and providing us with the opportunity to read your book. By the way, I think your doggie is adorable! lol
