Holidays can be hard. Make sure you take care of you.
Holidays can be hard. They are for me. But they’re also getting a bit lighter and better because I’m not being abused and tortured anymore, and because of some good people in my life. And also because I have a voice through my books, and I know that my books help people. So…pain and sadness can ease and change.
I hope you know that there is always hope and room for healing. That lightness and love can seep in. I hope that if you are having a hard time you reach out to others, online or in person. Or get it out through writing or art. I hope that if you have a dream you follow it. And that you always listen to your heart.
This holiday and always I wish for you comfort, love, and kindness, compassion and healing and so much happiness and laughter.
If you need to take time for yourself, do it. If you need to read or watch a movie or connect with a friend or cuddle an animal then do that. Do what you need to do for you and take good, gentle care of yourself.
I am so grateful for the dear friends I have in my life. For sweet little Petal. For my books being published and reaching readers. For being safe now. And for such a lovely online community. I hope you can find things to feel grateful for, too. I think it helps.

I spent hours on New Year’s Eve with the four little girls
I spent hours on New Year’s Eve with the four little girls, their parents, and their grandparents. We shared laughter, presents, and food. I have been feeling really sad and lonely before I went but spending time with them was a happy event. Connection with others is so important. And I love those girls. I’m grateful they all love me.
My very favorite present from them were the sweet, happy drawings from Leanne and Karen, and seeing their happiness with what I gave them. And the little bracelet that Leanne made me herself, and three little colored pencils that she bought herself at her school for me! I also loved the pink plaid flannel pajamas that they gave me. I’ve never had real pajamas as an adult! So this will be fun.
I wish you love, laughter, and connection with others always.

How awesome is this new Canadian $10 bill that features Viola Desmond
How awesome is this new Canadian $10 bill that features Viola Desmond, a Canadian Black businesswoman who challenged racial segregation and injustice at a cinema in Nova Scotia in 1946, and fought the ridiculous, racist charges after being arrested. Viola helped raise awareness about Canadian segregation, and this led to getting rid of Nova Scotia’s segregation laws. You can read more about her on blackhistorycanada.ca

My neighbour and friend Debbie got me this awesome rainbow magic sequin stocking!
My neighbour and friend Debbie got me this awesome rainbow magic sequin stocking! Now I have that and a Wonder Woman one my dear friend Julie gave me. I love how we can find things for the holiday that fits what we love, is creative and playful, and isn’t just traditional.
The lights on my tree and balcony look pretty and uplifting in the darkness, and Petal’s birthday also makes the season cheerier.
What makes it cheerier for you?

My lovely artist neighbour Jeanette just surprised me by giving me her rainbowy psychedelic jacket!
My lovely artist neighbour Jeanette just surprised me by giving me her rainbowy psychedelic jacket! Every time I saw her in it I mentioned how beautiful it was. I love rainbows both for standing for the LGBTQIA community and for hope and magic and beauty, and she knows that. And as a fellow creative soul she loves colour, too. I’m delighted! Colour makes me happier – and the kindness and generosity of neighbours and friends always does.
And though I still find many things about Christmas hard, yesterday I wrote a ton of Christmas cards with meaningful notes and Petal and I delivered them to a bunch of neighbors in my building. I think it helps to know that someone is thinking about you, especially when it’s a hard time of year or if you’re alone. And many of my neighbours have been dropping off cards for weeks, which reminded me to.
What nice thing has happened to you lately or have you done for others?

I just had an awesome Skype talk about SCARS with Dee Schmidt Kramer’s students who read SCARS
I just had an awesome Skype talk about SCARS with Dee Schmidt Kramer’s students who read SCARS as an independent reading book at Silver Creek High School in Indiana. The students asked such intelligent, thoughtful questions afterwards. I told them they could ask me anything and I meant it.
And despite some technical difficulties – I couldn’t see or hear them on Skype but they could see and hear me – it went really well. Dee helped solve it in a creative way, using her cell so I could see the students, typing their questions in Skype, and one student turned Dee’s cell to landscape mode so I could see them all.
I enjoyed it so much. I could see them taking it all in, and caring about it. I delight in readers caring about books – and authors!
Petal also made an appearance! (laughing) She’s always by my side, and at the end when I picked her up and she rested her head on my shoulder they awwed. (Smiling)

I also put up my Christmas tree the other day, and then finally decorated it today. It is probably too full of things but I love them all. I have fairies and unicorns and a pegasus; bookish decorations, especially kid-lit ones; superheroes; rainbows; and ornaments from people that I care about or that I bought when I was with them. And of course Petal! All of them have meaning to me. Some of them are for child parts of me that didn’t get to play when I was a kid, some of them are for the writer in me, and there are so many others. I think it’s important that we do what makes us feel good. So it might not look like a tree out of a magazine, but it’s a tree that feels right to me.
What kind of decorations do you like to put on a tree, or have around during the holidays?
