About Cheryl Rainfield

I write the books I needed and couldn't find as a teen. I write teen fiction--paranormal fantasy and gritty realistic fiction. I'm the author of SCARS (WestSide Books, 2010) #1 ALA QuickPicks, and Governor General Literary Award Finalist, HUNTED (WestSide Books, Oct 2011), STAINED (Harcourt, 2013), The Last Dragon (HIP Books, Sept 2009), and Walking Both Sides (HIP Books, 2011). I also enjoy drawing, surfing the web, connecting with people I like, doing crafts, and being with my dog.

Authors, people – please don’t say or suggest “all girls” anything, especially for romance.

I am reading a #YAlit book I am loving, even though I’m lesbian and there is a strong heterosexual romance thread in the book. As a lesbian I can still enjoy and identify with books with heterosexual romances, just as … Continue reading

I am glad to be here. And healing happens in layers.

I am glad that I am still here. Glad I am alive. But that doesn’t mean everything is easy. I still have hard days. Still have days where I really struggle. Have still had days where I thought of suicide. … Continue reading

I thought about suicide a lot as a teen. But I am grateful I am here now.

I thought of suicide a lot when I was a teen. I couldn’t bear the extreme emotional pain, depression, despair, & terror from the abuse & torture I was living. I needed it to end. I tried to kill myself … Continue reading

It’s important to counteract the negative messages from others – to give yourself positives – to heal. Even more so for those of us who were abused and who had words and our sense of self used against us. We … Continue reading

Happy Pride Month fellow #LGBTQIA people!

Happy Pride Month fellow #LGBTQIA people! 🌈
Some of you may not know that I have six books published – STAINED; SCARS; HUNTED; PARALLEL VISIONS; DRAGON SPEAKER: THE LAST DRAGON; and SKINWALKERS: WALKING BOTH SIDES. They’re all #YAlit. The first two are YA suspense and all the others are fantasy, including the last two which are hi-lo (high interest, low vocabulary). The ones that have my strongest voice, #LGBTQIA characters, and that deal with trauma and healing are the first four, though I feel like they all have small pieces of my soul.
