A number of teen readers have messaged me lately in distress, feeling that they don’t matter, that their lives don’t matter.

A number of teen readers have messaged me lately in distress, feeling that they don’t matter, that their lives don’t matter. I know that feeling well – but please remember that you matter, that your life has worth, and that things will get better. It may not feel like it right now, but it will. But you have to be here to see it get better.

If you are feeling suicidal or like hurting yourself, please reach out to crisis lines, and please read my Reasons Not To Kill Yourself. I have been there so many times because of the trauma from the torture and abuse. But despair and depression can pass, and the effects of trauma can lessen, and things get better. I am grateful that I am here now, and you can be, too. Please take good, gentle care of yourself.

I am editing another chapter drawn on trauma I endured –

I am editing another chapter drawn on trauma I endured – and just ate too much chocolate to get through it. I want my books to always be deep, real, honest, and in the end, healing…. And this manuscript – it has so much of my trauma and healing in it.

I don’t usually eat while I edit or write – but sometimes I just need that extra push to get through… I did not take a pic of all the chocolate wrappers. Heh. I also used other techniques to get through – getting up and doing a menial task for a few minutes while my brain and heart worked through what I needed to, and moments of positive distraction. After I finish this chapter I’m taking a break.

I so hope this book will speak to others and help them. #amwriting #amediting

A poem to my abusers

A poem to my abusers:

You made me afraid
to trust others
to trust myself.
You made me expect
everyone would hate abuse
rape torture me
the way you did.
I fought hard to trust
– sometimes trusting too easily –
to believe in the good
in people
but I found it and keep
finding it.
I heal and keep healing.
You lose. -Cheryl Rainfield, author of SCARS, STAINED, HUNTED.

I’ve been editing my new manuscript and enjoying it, but there are really intense scenes and chapters that are drawn from my abuse and trauma experience. Sometimes I need to take a break from it, and other times I just need to get it out a bit like this poem.

Talking about our abuse and trauma experience can be healing-especially when we are heard and met with compassion- and so can reading about or hearing about others, knowing that we are not alone. And then other times we just need to escape it. I think both are healthy as long as we’re not doing one or the other constantly. What do you think?

I am delighted that STAINED is featured in a Wiki video: 12 Compelling Young Adult Thrillers.

I am delighted that STAINED is featured in a Wiki video: 12 Compelling Young Adult Thrillers. (beaming) It is timely since Sarah in STAINED is raped by her captor and must find a way to save herself, just as I did – and this is #SAAM Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Survivors are strong.
You can see the video with 12 YA thrillers at https://wiki.ezvid.com/m/12-compelling-young-adult-thrillers-n3abSt2GDGfZL

It always feels so good when readers love my books and let others know –

It always feels so good when readers love my books and let others know – and even more when they see a need for my books, when they know my books can help others feel less alone, stop hurting themselves, know they are strong, and heal. Books are such a safe and powerful way to explore painful issues and be reminded of our own strength.
So I was delighted when reader Linda Hall-Webster posted this. Thank you for your generosity, Linda, in buying a copy for your library, too! You are a sweetheart.
From Linda Hall-Webster: “One of my favorites! Found it in the wild and had to grab it – Cheryl Rainfield, I knew I’d find one . ❤

This is actually my second copy purchased for myself. The first I donated to the library I used to work at because I knew it needed to be there. ❤
This work resonates with me for various reasons, mainly it’s a great story of over coming strife, leaning to trust not only yourself, your thoughts and memories too and that over all love is stronger than anything.” #cherylrainfield #YAwriter #LGBTQwriter #booknerd #bookworm #ireadYA #survivor #feminist #YAlit #YAbooks #bookstagram #bookrecs #scars #hunted #STAINED #selfharm #selfinjury #cutting #sexualabuse #trauma #healing #MeToo #csa #sexualassault

I think we all need reminders of positives, so this is mine right now for you:

I think we all need reminders of positives, so this is mine right now for you:

I hope you remember always that you don’t deserve to be hurt, not ever–not even by yourself.

You do deserve to be treated with compassion, empathy, and love by others and by yourself.

I hope you take good care of yourself. And I hope you keep connecting with others. We need those connections. And we need to treat ourselves gently and kindly, as kindly and gently as we would a friend.

Love to you all,
Cheryl Rainfield, author of SCARS, STAINED, HUNTED
P. S. if it helps you, feel free to download this video and play it whenever you need to. I mean every word.

If you are a teen boy, work with boys, or have a son, I hope you’ll read this important, powerful, and eye-opening article by @halseanderson about boys and consent, and then have some open, honest discussions. If we want a world with less sexual violence, we need to have these conversations and help boys understand how important consent is.

I appreciate this curated list

I appreciate this curated list author @gdcribbs created of YA books that deal with sexual abuse, sexual assault, trafficking, and more. It’s so important to have these books and these discussions, to #BelieveSurvivors and hear them, to help each other heal. And I am so glad to have my books included in this powerful list. #MeToo
