If you’re having a hard time this Mother’s Day you are not alone, and I see you.
If you’re having a hard time this Mother’s Day you are not alone, and I see you. Mother’s Day can be hard for so many of us–those of us who had abusive mothers, those who had good mothers but have lost them, those who want to be mothers but can’t, those who were forced to be mothers, those who are caretakers for their sick or dying mothers, those who have lost their children, those who have strained relationships with their children, and anything else that I’ve forgotten that makes it hard.
If this day is hard for you I hope you do whatever you need to do to take good, gentle care of you. Get a snuggle from a pet, get a hug from a friend, call or text someone, use positive distraction, whatever works for you. Today I’m using positive distraction strongly, watching movies and eating chocolate, going for a walk, cuddling with Petal, and staying aware that my depression and pain are from my past trauma.
I’m also trying to remind myself of the positives, of Petal who is like a baby to me, of Jean my therapist who is like a mom to me, of my close friends who are my chosen family, of my published books that give me a voice and that help other people, and of all the lovely readers who let me know that my books help them.
If you are having a hard day today, I hope that your struggling eases, that your mood lift, and that you find comfort.

A poem to my abusers
A poem to my abusers:
You made me afraid
to trust others
to trust myself.
You made me expect
everyone would hate abuse
rape torture me
the way you did.
I fought hard to trust
– sometimes trusting too easily –
to believe in the good
in people
but I found it and keep
finding it.
I heal and keep healing.
You lose. -Cheryl Rainfield, author of SCARS, STAINED, HUNTED.
I’ve been editing my new manuscript and enjoying it, but there are really intense scenes and chapters that are drawn from my abuse and trauma experience. Sometimes I need to take a break from it, and other times I just need to get it out a bit like this poem.
Talking about our abuse and trauma experience can be healing-especially when we are heard and met with compassion- and so can reading about or hearing about others, knowing that we are not alone. And then other times we just need to escape it. I think both are healthy as long as we’re not doing one or the other constantly. What do you think?
