Amazon is selling a book for pedophiles…

The Pedophile’s Guide to Love and Pleasure–on how to rape children more safely–safely for the pedophile, that is. Its focus is on how to get pedophiles lighter jail sentences should they be caught. I cannot believe Amazon is selling this! It is not okay on ANY level to encourage the rape of children–or of anyone. And Amazon, in selling this book, is encouraging the rape of children. A book like that should NOT be sold.

PLEASE Speak Loudly, and tell Amazon to remove this book from their site!

If you’ve read my blog or my YA novel Scars, you’ll know that I’m an incest and ritual abuse survivor. Rape was a daily and nightly occurrence in my home, from when I was a baby until I ran away…and they found me even after that. The rape alone left deep emotional scars that affected my entire view of the world, and left me feeling unsafe, unlovable, and unloved. It left me hating myself. Rape affects so much more than just the body it tears through. It hurts the soul.

My parents, who were part of a cult (actually, a number of interconnected cults) kept all sorts of horrible books in the house about torture and rape (and how to increase pain), as well as some weapons and implements. Most of those things they got through trading with or buying from other abusers–in secret. I am horrified that a book on how to rape children is now available–for anyone to buy, from any country–on Amazon.com. I am truly sickened. And enraged.

I know we all have busy lives. But please, please don’t let this pass you by. It only takes a few minutes to write an email to Amazon about this book. Hopefully, if enough of us deluge them, they will take the book down. They have not yet agreed to do so. You can also scroll down close to the bottom of the page for this book, where they have “Feedback” in a pale blue box, and click on “Would you like to report this content as inappropriate? Click here”. That will also help to gain Amazon’s attention.

Amazon–this is a real AmazonFail.

UPDATE: A great post with more info on the pedophile book Amazon is selling, and another way to help get them to stop selling it–by phoning in. Thanks to YA author Kimberly Pauley for the link.

If you’re interested in the email I wrote to Amazon, you can read it below:

Amazon–I was shocked and sickened to find that you are selling a book that promotes the rape of children on your site: The Pedophile’s Guide to Love and Pleasure.

I never thought I would see Amazon sell a book that hurts children, and encourages rape. My estimation of Amazon has sunk. Please remove this book from your site. It is not EVER okay to promote the rape of a child, or of anyone.

Thank you,
Cheryl Rainfield

    Cheryl,
This is deplorable! Not only has Amazon sunk below scum, but what about the publisher and the author. This is like a free license to abuse and destroy children.
Cheryl it takes great courage to speak out about your own story of abuse. You help others with your strength. Thank you.

  3. Elizabeth–I’m truly shocked by Amazon selling this book. I think the book might be self-published…. But yes, the author…also scares me.

And thank you for your kind words; I really appreciate it!

  4. Cheryl, I’ve sent an email, too. It’s so shocking I have to wonder if it’s a hoax. But even if that’s the case, it’s in such incredibly poor taste you’d think Amazon would want to distance itself from it as much as possible, not profit from it. I’ll look forward to hearing more from them and you about the matter.

While I love your post and I am very sorry for what you have been through I have to say I am a bit appalled that you would use the Speak Loudly motif to call for a ban on a book when Speak Loudly was clearly all about not banning books.
Do I agree with this material no, do I want it out there, definitely not. However after thinking long and hard all day I have come to the conclusion that if it is legal to be sold, it should be sold.

  6. Lisa, thank you so very, very much for emailing Amazon! I keep hoping we can shame them into taking the book down; they’ve done that before…. I don’t think it’s a hoax. See this news story: http://ht.ly/37RgU

  7. Pam, SpeakLoudly was about not having Speak be banned, yes. But it was also about it not being banned because someone thought that the rape scenes in the book were pornography. To me, there is a very close relationship here–suggesting that rape is ever okay.

The abuse and rape of children is not legal. I’m not sure how a book that encourages that can be legal. Perhaps it is–but then, laws often fail children and women.

  8. Ezzy Languzzi says:

Cheryl, I am beyond horrified that such a book could EVER be published. I saw the headline on CNN this a.m. and couldn’t bring myself to click on it; it made me sick. I’ll be sure to email AMAZON with my objections, letting them know that I’ll not be purchasing from them, again. How could I? The title of the book has the words “pedophile” and “love” in the same sentence! Apparently, they feel no responsibility for helping to protect our children. SHAME ON THEM. It’s a horror-show. I don’t understand how selling it could be legal? And I’m sorry but a book that promotes the rape and abuse of women and children? Yeah, I’d ban it. Thanks so much for the post.

  9. Ezzy–I am so glad you’re horrified about this–I truly am, too. And so very glad you’re going to email Amazon! Thank you! Yes–“pedophile” and “love” do not go in the same sentence together. I don’t care how “gentle” a rapists thinks he (or she) is being, it’s still rape. I don’t understand how selling it can be legal, either! And thank you for what you said; I needed to hear that. (smiling at you)

  10. Stef Kelsey says:

Email sent. I also posted a negative review. This is insane. They should take it down and send the owner’s info to the police.

  11. Hi Cheryl, thanks for the heads up on the KidLit list. Just sent my email.

    Hugs.

  12. Adrienne says:

Cheryl, I think they took it down…I can’t access it, please double check and confirm.

  13. Stef, thank you so much for writing in to Amazon! I really appreciate that!

Jennifer, thank you for emailing Amazon! And thank you for the thanks re the heads up. (smiling at you) I am so glad people care!

Adrienne–YES! The book is finally down! (beaming) I am so very glad–we made a difference!!

  14. For a while there was a server crash on that book page with so many people writing to comment on the book. But Amazon has now removed the book; I got an email from them saying so, and I double-checked the site. Hurray!!!!!

  15. l says:

REALLY? yOU OUGHT NOT TO BE IN BUSINESS. YOU’D BEST GET RID OF THAT DISPICABLE, DEPLORABLE LITERATURE(??). NOT FIT FOR A HUMAN BEING TO READ. I AM DISGUSTED.

  16. Pam, I disagree with your remark. The author has a First Amendment right to say what he will, but Amazon is under no obligation to make it available (much less make a profit from it). Publishers, booksellers, and libraries each have their own standards. My question is why Amazon decided that a book encouraging the rape of children met their standards.

  17. marcia weiner says:

I was so pleased to see that A Pedophile’s Guide has been removed from Amazon’s book list.

Thank you Cheryl for your efforts on behalf of this action.

  18. Thank you very much, Marcia; I appreciate that! (smiling at you) I’m so glad it’s been removed, too!
