I am reading and absolutely loving #mglit fantasy TILLY AND THE BOOKWANDERERS by Anna James.

I am reading and absolutely loving #mglit fantasy TILLY AND THE BOOKWANDERERS by Anna James. It is such a deliciously magical bookish novel about Tilly, a girl who loves to read who lives with her grandparents in a bookshop and starts to see and then be able to talk with her favorite characters from books including Anne of Green Gables. (I love Anne of Green Gables and I think the author captured her perfectly). She also spots her grandparents talking to their favorite authors.

I love the idea of characters from books coming to life, and it reminds me a bit of INKHEART by Cornelia Funke (another of my favourites). I love books about books, especially when they are magical. It also deals with loss of a parent, being left out, and discovering new friends.

I am finding this such a comforting, fun, delightful, satisfying read that I think it will become one of my favorites that I want to re-read over and over. And I am excited to see that it is the first in a series (Pages & Co)

I love when Petal does this when I’m reading

I love when Petal does this when I’m reading – puts her paw against my body to make sure I’m there. It is so sweet. (Smiling)

I am reading the sequel to The Emerald Atlas called The Fire Chronicle, and enjoying it. I love engaging #MGlit (and #YAlit) fantasy.

Reading a good book and cuddling with Petal – two of my favourite things to do.

Reading a good book and cuddling with Petal – two of my favourite things to do.

I am reading #mglit THE EMERALD ATLAS by John Stephens and loving it. I love that the two sisters are strong girl-characters and heroes as well as their brother. Love that they stick together as family, through hardships and strife. Love that there are many helper characters.

Books and cuddles – perfect for a cold winter day (or any day). #theemeraldatlas #johnstephens #mgbooks #mgfantasy

I saw Mary Poppins Returns yesterday and loved it!

I saw Mary Poppins Returns yesterday with some friends. I loved the original so much with Julie Andrews and have seen it so many times that I was a little bit worried about whether this sequel would be good. But it was beautiful and magical, and so well acted and written. And I loved the appearances by 91-year-old Angela Lansbury as the balloon woman and 91-year-old Dick Van Dyke as the old banker. Emily Blunt was absolutely wonderful as Mary Poppins, with a slightly different take, slightly sterner and brassier but still kind and magical, tender and playful, and it was clear she was enjoying it. Lin-Manuel Miranda was lovely as Jack, a lamplighter who brings light, hope, dance, and song and knows Mary Poppins and the magic is real, and Meryl Streep as Mary Poppins’ cousin Topsy Turvey was so much fun. So were grown up Jane and Michael Banks who did an incredible job, and the three new Banks children were fantastic. Everyone who sang did so beautifully. There were so many positive messages and so much good feeling mixed in with some grief and sadness, and wonder and joy. The movie was a delight.

I was glad to see it was updated with some people of colour including a kind banker, and glad that Jane had a strong-woman role.
I wish Mary Poppins had used a bit more magic and obvious direction – to me she’s the star – but I love that she helped the family rediscover play and joy and being a child. In a time with so much negativity, this movie was uplifting and refreshing.
Highly recommended!

I love the #bookswag I got for Wendy Orr’s books

I love the #bookswag I got for @wendy_orr_author ‘s books – a dragonfly button for DRAGONFLY SONG and a swallow enamel pin for SWALLOW’S DANCE which has been nominated for the 2018 TD Children’ s Literature Award.

But the biggest thrill was meeting Wendy Orr and talking to her in person.
